2019 was a pretty incredible year. My Ironman Journey started in 2013, thanks to my daughter Naomi. In July 2013 we did our first Sprint triathlon. I spent the first half of 2013 learning how to swim (yes, I could not swim AT ALL. Yes, it’s crazy). My first triathlon was a rush and I wanted to do it again. I did an Olympic triathlon in 2014, I did my first Half Ironman in 2017, and my first Ironman in 2019.
Nothing but good things have come from this change in lifestyle. First, I’m in the best shape of my life, and I was pretty active as a kid, so that is saying something. Second, I find training is a fantastic way to focus and reduce stress. Third, everybody knows that I’m quite competitive, and triathlon is a great way to channel that energy. The bottom line is I expect I’ll be doing this as long as I’m physically (and mentally!) able to do so.
The other thing I love about this is the friends I’ve made along the way. One of them (Manolo Teijelo) invited me to run a team marathon at this crazy event called RunAPalooza. 5 people run a portion of a marathon, and we raise money for Special Olympics. This has become my “other” tradition, where my training season starts with RunAPalooza and generally ends with an Ironman race. This is the 6th year I’ll be doing RunAPalooza, and the 4th that I will be training for an Ironman. I’m digging this theme ;-).
In addition, I ramped up the fundraising efforts last year to correspond to my first full Ironman, and raised over $1500 for Special Olympics. So, this is my next annual theme – continuing to raise money for this awesome charity that supports amazing athletes that have overcome a lot to perform at the highest levels. They inspire me!
Please consider sponsoring my 2020 training for Ironman 70.3 Lake Placid, which I will be doing with Naomi in September. I will also be running a full marathon with her in April, although not really “with” her. Naomi ran her first full marathon in October 2019 and her time was good enough to qualify for NY and Boston! She is an awesome athlete and person and I’m inspired by her daily.
Similar to last year, I will share my 2020 racing events here, leading up to Lake Placid:
4/4/2020 – RunaPalooza (6 miles of a marathon)
4/26/2020 – NJ Marathon (26.2 miles, with Naomi)
5/10/2020 – Run the Hook (10K, with Andrea and maybe Naomi)
5/23/2020 – Spring Lake 5 (5 mile run – with Andrea and Naomi)
5/24/2020 – Navesink or Swim (2.4 miles, with Naomi and our friend David)
6/14/2020 – Escape the Cape Olympic Triathlon (Andrea is doing the Sprint and David is doing the 3 mile swim!)
6/27/2020 – War at the Shore Olympic Triathlon with David
7/19/2020 – NJ Olympic Triathlon (1500 yard swim, 25 mile bike, 10K run) – with Naomi. And Andrea is doing the Sprint on Saturday!
9/3/2020 – Lake George Olympic Triathlon (TENTATIVE, with David)
9/13/2020 – Lake Placid Half Ironman – 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run (with Naomi)
Please help support me in my continued efforts, and please donate what you can to Special Olympics in support of my efforts at RunAPalooza in support of Manolo’s Maniacs (our team name) as well as my ongoing efforts all year in support of my second Ironman Journey. I hope to see you all along the way!!
